Breathing Under Water: An Alternative Mind (Step 11)

Prayer isn’t just a telephone line to God; it’s a zoom lens, a trip to the beach, an alternative operating system for your everyday life. When we are in the process of living into a healthier, more mature self, this kind of meditative practice can help us find a new way through the mazes and mysteries of our lives. Kris and Susan continue their series on addiction and recovery based on on Richard Rohr’s Breathing Under Water: Spirituality and the Twelve Steps.

Step 11 is, we sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood [God], praying only for knowledge of [God’s] will for us and the power to carry that out.

Scriptures for this episode include:

“Be still, and know that I am God!
I am exalted among the nations,
I am exalted in the earth.”
Psalm 46:10

You were taught to put away your former way of life, your old self, corrupt and deluded by its lusts, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds…
        Ephesians 4:22-23

In the morning, while it was still very dark, [Jesus] got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed.
Mark 1:35
